If you like really strong coffee in a small volume, the mocha pot is ideal for you . One cup is around 50 ml and in terms of strength, mocha coffee is comparable to espresso. Of course, it will never be as strong as real espresso, but it is very similar. After all, that's why Alfonso Bialetti invented it in 1933. He wanted to indulge Italians, lovers of espresso, so that they could prepare strong coffee like from a cafe in the comfort of their own home. The main advantage of the moka pot is the very low price compared to espresso coffee machines. Often, a moka pot for a few hundred will make significantly better coffee than a coffee machine for 1-5 thousand CZK , or capsule coffee machines.
Recommended coffee
This is probably the most important thing for preparation in mocha coffee selection. Coffee should always be as fresh as possible, ideally a few days after roasting. Do not buy coffee in chain stores, but rather visit a specialized store that will supply you with freshly roasted coffee. Strong coffees such as Costa Rica Tarrazu or Kenya Top Masai are perfect for preparing in a moka pot. But there are no limits to your imagination.
Grinding coarseness
The coffee for the moka pot should ideally be ground just before preparation . Forget pre-ground coffee from the supermarket. If you don't have a grinder, get your coffee ground at a coffee shop and don't forget to mention that you want to use it in a moka pot. The coarseness of grinding for a moka pot is finer than for a drip, but coarser than for a classic espresso, i.e. approximately the consistency of sand .
The water temperature
Opinions on whether the water should be warm or cold vary. Some people find the coffee a bit burnt when using cold mocha water due to longer heating. However, many baristas prefer cold water because of the fuller body of the resulting drink. Try and find out which water suits you. For the most demanding, we recommend filtered water.
GRINDING COARSE: medium fine grinding
In the case of a moka pot, bad grinding will show up very quickly. The coffee will not slowly flow out of the "volcano", but will sputter all around. In this case, it is necessary to choose medium fine grinding. Conversely, if the coffee tastes too bland, grind a little more finely.

We have rather described the preparation of coffee in a moka pot for you in more detail, although the preparation itself is simple and basically just fills the lower container with water, fills the middle part with coffee and places it on the stove. Instructions on how to prepare coffee using a moka pot
- Fill the lower container with water (ideally filtered water), up to the limit given by the safety valve.
- Grind the coffee medium fine (see "grinding coarseness").
- Insert the funnel and pour the required amount of ground coffee into it . For 3 cups of mocha coffee, you need 15 g of coffee and approx. 160 ml of water. The coffee filter should always be full, flush to the edge. However, if you want a weaker coffee, it is possible to remove a small portion of the coffee. Do not press the coffee in any way, just smooth the surface and make sure there is no coffee on the edges of the funnel and in the thread.
- Put on the upper container and screw it sufficiently with a twisting motion (not by pressing on the handle, otherwise it may break off)!
- Place the moka pot on the heat source and let it boil. If you are cooking on a gas stove, make sure that the flame is no more than the size of the bottom of the kettle and does not extend over its edges. Always cook on medium power of your stove to avoid rapid extraction and burning.
- Never wait for all the water to drain from the lower container up. After a while, mocha coffee will start to heat up too much and burn, and the resulting drink will not be as good. Try to remove the kettle from the stove just before the extraction is complete, when you hear a distinct "bubbling" sound. The extraction can also be stopped by immersing the mocha pot in cold water after completion.
- You can now serve Moka coffee.
- When the kettle has completely cooled, unscrew it and clean it (water is enough) and dry it to prevent corrosion! Do not use cleaning agents and do not wash in the dishwasher!
